Michigan has earned plenty of national attention over the years for its freshwater beaches, passion for building the world's greatest cars, and weather that changes moods faster than a toddler at bedtime. Now we can add "bed bugs' favorite spot" to the brochure.

The study combined research from Orkin and Terminix's latest Top 50 bed bug rankings with TripAdvisor hotel reviews from the three largest cities in every state. They also looked at low-rated reviews mentioning bed bugs, company treatment data, and social media mentions.

So yes, this ranking was built on pest reports, angry hotel reviews, exterminator activity, and people wondering out loud, "Why is my leg so itchy?"

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says bed bugs are not known to spread disease, which is lovely, but also not the comforting statement they think it is. These tiny little bloodsuckers can still cause itchy bites, allergic reactions, lost sleep, anxiety, and expensive treatment. They are basically the glitter of pests. Once they show up, they aren't leaving without a thorough cleaning.

Warren, Michigan, was named America's top bed bug hotspot, with Casino.ca putting the odds of encountering bed bugs there at 1 in 59. Michigan also ranked as the state with the highest risk of bed bugs.

Keep in mind that Warren was named the highest risk city based on reported pest activity, reviews, and online mentions, not because every hotel room is infested. Bed bugs are hitchhikers, and in busy communities with hotels, apartments, commuters, and travelers, they can spread faster than anyone wants to think about.
