Here we go again. As travel ramps up, it's time to take a look at your risk of bringing home some unwanted souvenirs: bed bugs. Fortunately, for travelers in Michigan and around the country, Terminix has released its annual study for the 50 Most Bed Bug-Infested Cities in America for 2025, and wouldn't you know it, a Michigan metro is among them.

These tiny bloodsuckers are tough to spot, so before you get too comfortable, or even bring your bags in from the car, here are some tips from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help spot bed bugs before they make a meal out of you.

One of the biggest tell-tale signs is rusty or reddish stains on the sheets or mattress. These are a result of bed bugs being crushed. Also, look for tiny dark spots, about the size of a period. This is bed bug excrement, and it really stands out on lighter fabrics.

Other signs to look for are bed bug eggs and their shells. You may also spot some yellow skins that these parasites shed as they grow. Basically, bed bugs are the worst roommates ever.

You'll also want to look away from the bed, around the baseboard trim, where bed bugs travel, for signs of infestation. Of course, though it's probably too late, if you wake up with itchy bumps on areas of your skin that were exposed overnight, you may very well be a host to these tiny insects.
