Michigan Officials Sound Alarm Over Flesh-Eating Parasite Threat
Well, if your summer budget wasn't enough to worry about, you can now add a flesh-eating parasite to your list.
RELATED:
According to a press release from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), new animal entry requirements took effect on June 17, 2026, to help keep the New World screwworm out of Michigan after infestations were confirmed in Texas and New Mexico.
What Exactly is a New World Screwworm

Despite sounding like a rejected name for a heavy metal band, New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae burrow into the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. Livestock, pets, wildlife, and even people can be affected if this pest gets a foothold.

The parasite typically enters through an open wound, scratch, or exposed tissue. Once inside, things get real ugly, real fast. That's why animal owners in Michigan are being urged to check their animals daily for wounds that appear to be getting larger rather than healing.
Why Michigan Is Taking Urgent Action

Michigan hasn't detected any New World screwworm cases, and MDARD is trying to keep it that way. New movement restrictions now apply to certain livestock and other domestic animals entering Michigan from areas where the pest has been detected. Animals coming directly from infested properties are prohibited from entering the state until quarantines are lifted.
What Should You Do?
For most Michigan residents, this isn't a "panic and barricade the doors" situation. But if you own livestock, horses, or pets, keep an eye on wounds that won't heal or animals showing unusual irritation. If you suspect screwworm, contact MDARD immediately at 1-800-292-3939.

The good news? The parasite isn't in Michigan (at least, not yet). It's a brave New World (screwworm) out there.
