What Are Snow Fleas Really?

Snow fleas tend to show up when temperatures start flirting with warmer days. Not flip-flop weather — but just enough warmth to wake up the soil beneath the snow. In Michigan, that's basically spring stretching before getting out of bed.

How Snow Fleas Survive the Cold

Despite the name, snow fleas aren't fleas. According to Positive Bloom, they don't bite, don't infest pets, and don't want anything to do with you. They're springtails, a primitive group of insects that live in soil year-round. You only notice them in winter because black dots crawling around on white snow look and feel unsettling.

MSU Extension reports snow fleas can hop thanks to a spring-like tail called a furcula, which earned them their name. Michigan's snow fleas, despite what logic may dictate, are cold weather-enthusiasts. They produce a natural antifreeze protein that allows them to function at sub-zero temperatures and to feed on decaying plant matter and bacteria. They are the year-round cleaning crew you rarely see.

Snow fleas often appear when snow starts to soften, and daytime temps creep upward. Translation: the ground is waking up. In Michigan, that's as close to a spring announcement as you get.
