Michigan Bed Bugs: 3 Cities CRAWLING on US 50 Most Infested

Orkin, the pest control gurus who keep the creepy crawlers away, has revealed this year's ranking for America's Most Bed Bug Infested Cities. Last year, Michigan had 4 metro's that appeared on the itch-inducing list, while Ohio had a staggering 6.

On the 2023 ranking, Michigan's Capitol city, Lansing, was the 42nd most bed bug-riddled state in the country. This year, Lansing has fallen off the top 50, which is great news for Mid-Michigan tourism.

This means that the bulk of Orkin's bed bug calls in the United States, both residential and commercial bed bug extermination calls, were in Ohio. While the residential calls are limited to personal homes, one has to wonder how many of those 'commercial' calls included Ohio hotels, motels, and Airbnb.

Because of their size, they usually only travel 5 to 20 feet for their food, so a hotel room or rental bedroom is just the right square footage. Their tiny bodies also make them hard to spot, so when checking your space it's easier to look for signs of their occupation than it is to see the individual insects:

• Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
• Dark spots (about this size: •), which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would.
• Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
• Live bed bugs.
