If You Get Sick, These Are Go-To Foods to Help You Feel Better
We all have a favorite food while we are sick, but if you are looking for foods that might help you feel better sooner, these can help. Some of these suggestions are from the "Lansing Foodies" page on Facebook, and some are from healthline.com. Hopefully some of these suggestions help you next time you get sick, no matter the season.
First, chicken soup is a must when you are sick. This is because it is a good source of fluids, calories, protein, vitamins and minerals as well as also a natural decongestant. But along with chicken soup some suggestions from the "Lansing foodies" group suggest spicy soups like a Chinese Hot and Sour soup to clear the sinuses and also to help warm up your body.
Next, this was suggested a lot in the Facebook group: hot tea. Tea is a good source of fluids and acts as a natural decongestant when hot. Of course there are a lot of choices of teas. Black tea can decrease the growth of bacteria in the throat, and echinacea tea may shorten the length of the cold or flu. Also I like to add honey to tea when I'm sick as it helps to keep your throat from being all scratchy and also it helps with the taste of the tea.
Another thing that has been suggested (and it is probably because we are all Michiganders) is Vernors. Vernors is a good drink anytime but mostly when you are sick because it has ginger in it. Ginger is good when you're sick because it is very effective at relieving nausea and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. So mixing some Vernors with some hot or hot and spicy soup might not only heat up your body but will also get you to feeling better faster.
