When big events roll into Michigan, they bring excitement, international crowds, traffic, and, unfortunately, opportunity for people who exploit others. Ahead of the Detroit Auto Show, Attorney General Dana Nessel is reminding Michiganders of a hard truth. Human trafficking does not live in shadowy, unseen, faraway places. It happens here, and often hides in plain sight.

Human Trafficking Doesn’t Just Happen Elsewhere

Human trafficking is one of the most profitable crimes in the world, and Michigan is not immune. It can involve forced labor or sexual exploitation, and it does not always look like what TV dramas or Liam Neeson movies suggest.

In fact, labor trafficking can show up in everyday places across the state, including convenience stores, nail salons, massage parlors, restaurants, and agricultural work. Sometimes, the people being trafficked do not even realize they are victims or do not know how to get help.

Knowing the signs can make a difference. According to a release from the Michigan Attorney General's Office, someone who is being trafficked:

  • May have visible injuries like bruises, cuts, burns, or scars
  • May not control their own money or important documents like identification
  • May avoid eye contact
  • May appear fearful of the person they are with
  • May appear unwilling to speak with others or have someone speak for them
