First up: the sudden business closure. You prepay for something big and poof, the business vanishes, and suddenly you're the proud owner of nothing. Feel like that restaurant's deal on gift cards is too good to be true? Maybe it is. Do some research before handing over your cash, especially to places you've never heard of until five minutes ago or businesses you rarely ever see busy.

Next, gift card scams, the most obvious scam, still somehow works. If someone demands payment in gift cards, congratulations, you've found a scammer. Real businesses don't want iTunes cards. Ever.

Why Return Policies Matter More Than Ever

Finally, return policy chaos. Know the policy, keep your receipt, and be suspicious of stores that change rules. Legitimate businesses don't make up policies on the fly.
