All Hail The Potato Chip Inventor
During Black History Month, I thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to one of my heroes. His name is George Crum, and he is the inventor of the potato chip. Here is his story.
Back in 1853 George Crum, a man of African and Native American decent, invented the potato chip at a restaurant called Cary's Moon Lakehouse in Saratoga Springs, NY.
The story goes that a customer at the restaurant sent back his order of fries saying they were too thick and soggy and he would not eat them.
Back to the kitchen they went. George Crum tried again and still the customer was unhappy. At this point, cook George Crum had had enough. So he sliced the potatos super slim, fried them and added salt. Ta Da! The potato chip, which was meant a joke on the customer, became a much loved item. The diner, was very happy and since then, potato chip lovers like me have also been very happy.
George Crum went on to open his own restaurant called Crum's, but the magic of his delicious potato chips live on.
Well done George Crum, well done.
