
What 500 Walgreens Closures Mean For Michigan Residents
Let's all take a deep breath, preferably with a prescription inhaler you can still fill at Walgreens—for now. In October 2024, Walgreens announced it'd be closing 1,200 stores but left us with no list, and no idea which locations, if any, in Michigan would be shuttered.

For those of us who are still feeling hurt by Rite Aid's decision to close not only stores but every location in Michigan, you might understand how this news might make a few people nervous, especially since an entire chain ghosted the Mitten State.
Walgreens Releases List of Nearly 60 Locations Slated to Close
If you were one of the many Michiganders who had to transfer prescriptions, find a new pharmacy, or learn how to use the CVS app, this Walgreens announcement might bring back traumatic flashbacks.
According to The Hill, while we don't know the full list of 1,200, the latest list of nearly 60 Walgreens locations that are scheduled to be shuttered thankfully doesn't include any Michigan stores—yet.
Michigan's Not Out of the Walgreens Closing Shuffle Yet
But let's not break out the celebratory bottle of Flintstone's vitamins just yet. With literally hundreds more closures still coming, Michigan might not be in the clear. You'd think that the hole left by Rite Aid would give the suits at Walgreens corporate a reason to hyperserve Michigan, not abandon it, but time will tell.

Monitoring the website is the best way to know if your favorite location is closing. Keep tabs on your store and hope you don't see a similar message to this one, recently posted on the soon-to-be-closed Walgreens website in East Hartford, Connecticut:
This location will permanently close on May 20. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have prescriptions at this location, learn about filling your Rx at another Walgreens
Or, and I hate to say it, maybe it's time to start scouting out new pharmacies and get ahead of what will be, or at least feels like, another Michigan retail mass exodus.
