Here comes another round of layoffs, this time hitting a little too close to my morning cup of joe. Starbucks has announced that, in a cost-cutting measure, it will cut 1,100 jobs in the name of "efficiency." What does this mean for your favorite headset-wearing, pup cup-giving barista in Michigan?

Fortunately, for Starbucks' forward-facing coffee slingers in Michigan, no entry-level positions are being grounded at this time. Nope, according to AP Business Writer Dee-Ann Durbin, this time around, the layoffs are all on the corporate level.

According to GlassDoor, the annual salary of a Starbucks corporate employee is between $90,000 and $153,000, plus bonuses. Even at $90K, you'd have to buy 27,692 Venti coffees at $3.25 each. I love coffee and hate to see anyone lose their job, but I'm sorry. 27,692 is 692 over my allotted annual caffeine intake.

How many of these corporate jobs are tied to Michigan? It's hard to say, but with the bulk of Starbucks non-store personnel working at the company headquarters in Seattle, it's safe to say that when you roll up at 6 a.m. with a strong desire for a surge of energy, you won't notice anything.

Changes You Will See In Michigan

The company is making some sweeping changes that you will notice in your Michigan Starbucks, according to AP News:

  • Menu Items Disappearing: Okay, because the issue is that there are too many choices, not overpriced drinks? Huh.
  • Speeding Up Service: Does this mean you won't have the trunk of your car sticking out into rush hour traffic in the drive-thru line? Fingers crossed!
  • Bringing Back 'Community' Feel: While I've been in many Starbucks, I've never felt like it was a 'local' store.

Starbucks isn't the first company serving Michigan to lay off high-level employees. Southwest recently announced, as reported by CBS News, that it would lay off 1,700 positions, including 15% of its corporate and leadership positions. Remember that next time your flight is delayed at Detroit Metro.

This will be a tough road for the coffee giant, especially when it comes to getting that 'community feel.' Starbucks is literally the punchline for every joke that requires a 'corporate' store.
