Salvation Army Red Kettles Come with a New Twist

For many years we've all seen Salvation Army bell ringers throughout the Greater Lansing area. Growing up I would see them all the time in front of Meijer stores, K-Mart, Kroger, Art Van, Sears, and so many more. Most of the time it would be someone dressed as Santa Claus.

According to the Lansing State Journal, Salvation Army bell ringers with their familiar, old fashioned red kettles will start raising money in the Lansing area beginning today.

There's a new twist this year when it comes to the big red kettles, instead of digging in their pockets for coins and dollar bills, donors will be able to pull out their cell phones.

For the first time, bell ringers will also collect donations via Apple Pay and Google Pay. The Salvation Army is calling it Kettle Pay.

Kettle Pay allows donors to use their smart phones to scan a QR code for Apple Pay or hover over a Google Pay symbol to donate electronically.

Last year, the Salvation Army provided 5,300 individuals with food assistance in the tri-county area. Please click on the above link for more information.
