Michigan is bringing back the red, white, and blue license plate, because apparently, 2026 needed more patriotic flair and fewer beige rectangles. In honor of America's 250th birthday, the state is reviving one of its most beloved plates, and yes, it is absolutely doing a victory lap around nostalgia lane.

Michigan's Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced via press release that starting January 2, 2026, Michiganders can order the semiquincentennial plate, a modern remix of the iconic 1976 bicentennial design that hasn't been available since 1978.

The original plate wasn't just pretty. It won Michigan its first "plate of the Year" award from the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association, which is a real group of people who take license plates extremely seriously.

The History of the Original Bicentennial Plate

This revival didn't happen by accident. Gretchen Whitmer signed Public Act 317 of 2023, clearing the way for the return of the red, white, and blue plate alongside other legacy designs from the 70s and 80s.

The cost is a one-time $55 fee (worth it), with $50 going straight to the Michigan Transportation Fund, which means every patriotic drive technically helps fix potholes. That's freedom and suspension working together.

You can order online, at a dealership, or in person at the Michigan Secretary of State office. Just remember, it's appointment only, so no walk-ins. This limited-edition plate is deeply Michigan and, frankly, looks way better than the "Old Blue" throwback they put out in 2025. Thanks for having a birthday, America. My bumper thanks you.
