
UPDATED: Big Lots Closing 12 Stores in Michigan, More to Come?
UPDATED: And then there were 12. A new location has been added to the list of 11 stores, but will it stop there?
We knew it was coming, but we didn't expect it to be this, well, BIG. Big Lots, a national discount retailer specializing in discontinued and repackaged merchandise with nearly 1,400 locations, announced its intention to close around three dozen stores nationwide this year. The move is meant to bring the company back from the brink of financial ruin. Then, according to an August 2, 2024 Detroit Free Press article, the company announced they'd expanded their closure list to 300 stores nationwide, including 11 total in Michigan. UPDATED October 3, 2024: The list has now reached 12. See the ongoing list below.
Big Lots Website List 12 Michigan Stores as Closing or Permanently Closed
As of publication, Michigan has 46 Big Lots stores scattered throughout the state. A quick look at the retailer's website shows that 12 of those are now emblazoned with an orange "CLOSING THIS LOCATION" header. Here's a look at the 11 closures to date we will see for Big Lots in Michigan:

- Okemos (Permanently Closed)

- Portage

- 2850 Washtenaw Avenue
- Taylor
- 23351 Eureka Rd.
With these new closures, 34 Big Lots will remain in the Mitten State unless additional closures are needed beyond the locations already listed , with more likely to come.
Big Lots joins the legions of national discount retailers and restaurants that are struggling to find their place amid lower consumer spending and the increased use and ease of online shopping and ordering. Red Lobster, Rite Aid, CVS, and more have felt the sting of the new economy.
