When does Spring start in Michigan? Well, according to the calendar, there is a set date in which we are told that spring has begun. But, a lot of the time, the weather and that date don't always complement each other. Especially with weather like we've had recently. We went from sunny weather in the low 80s to storms to snow, all over a 48-hour period.

So How Do Michigan Residents Truly Recognize Spring?

According to Naturallist, there are over 200 species of trillium worldwide, mostly native to North America. And Visit Michigan Up North confirms that, although there are many signs in Michigan that spring and summer are on their way, the first blooming of the trillium is normally one of the most definite.

How Long Does the Spring Bloom Last?

Normally beginning in late April, and running through mid-May, the Michigan woods explode with carpets of trillium that create some of the most beautiful (and photogenic) landscapes on the planet. But to experience this annual phenomenon, you have to be prepared, as it only lasts for a few weeks.

But when you can get photos like this, it makes it worth it.

The Michigan Nature Association explains that the trillium flower is a symbol of purity and elegance, likely due to its stark white color. And the fact that trillium typically thrives in wooded areas where acidic soil is present explains why the Michigan woods are the perfect place for blankets of trillium to thrive. This is true for both the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.

If you've never seen a blanket of trillium flowers in person before, do yourself a favor and look for some. Because when you find that first carpet of blooms, you'll be thankful you did.

A tip from the caption on River Raisin Watershed Council's YouTube video regarding trillium - do not pick them and transfer them to your yard. If you want your own trillium flowers, check your local nursery. Check out their full video below.

Then, you will know—at least in Michigan—that spring is truly on the way.
