Updated – Lansing Overnight Parking Changes and Costs

The Lansing City Council voted Monday (12/16/19)  to beef up a city parking ordinance that bans parking from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The new rules are slated to go into effect on March 1, 2020.

Here are some of the details:

Annual permits will be available to local residents for $125. By March, those who park on city streets between 2-5 a.m. without them should expect to receive tickets. The fine would remain at $25 (or $35 during a snow emergency).

Permits will not be issued for recreational vehicles, trailers, boats or vehicles with more than two axles. 

Two temporary permits — for overnight guests, for example  ��� could also be issued for any given address within the same 72-hour period. Those will be made available for $10 a night for a maximum of three nights. 

All residents regardless of income will be asked to pay the flat $125 annual rate should they apply and eventually receive the right to park overnight.

The proposed permits would also only serve as a waiver for the city’s 2-5 a.m. parking restrictions and would carry no additional parking benefits or exceptions to usual meter fees and other fines and costs.

Residents would still be required to vacate streets for snow plowing or other emergency situations as mandated by city officials or else risk automatic revocation of their annual permits without notice.

Theses are the new pay stations for on street parking. They have been causing a little bit of a headache. It's a little bit of a learning curve. All you have to do is...

1. Park your vehicle as usual.
2. Make a note of your license plate number.
3. Look for any conveniently located pay station.
4. Press the start key to “wake” the unit from power save mode.
5. Using the key pad enter your license plate number and zone number your vehicle is located in, then press the green check mark button to confirm.
6. Insert your payment method of change or credit/debit card.
7. Select your stay time using the blue “-” and “+” buttons shown on the key pad. Press the red cancel button if you need to start over.
8. Press the green button on the key pad to confirm stay time and your receipt will be printed.
9. Take your receipt with you. The time your parking expires is printed right on the receipt. (LansingMi.gov)

Easy right? They're helping.

And now, Lansing City Council is considering changes to Overnight Parking.

• They are considering adding overnight parking permits between 2 a.m and 5 a.m.
• Right now, there is a parking ordinance in place that prohibits parking during those hours, but police rarely enforce that law.
• If this new ordinance was to go in place police would ticket drivers without permits $25.
• The proposal says that Lansing residents could get an annual permit, while visitors can get a 3-day pass to park overnight. (WILX)

We know how much the tickets are going to be, but no price has been set yet for the permits.

There is a meeting to discuss the permits Thursday (Decembr 5th) at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall.
