A Look Inside the Abandoned Murphy Academy: Detroit, Michigan
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. By doing so you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing on private property.
The abandoned Murphy Academy is located on Fenkell Street in Detroit.
Once upon a time it was filled with 150 students from grades pre-kindergarten to 8th grade. The school unceremoniously closed - permanently - in 2018.
A number of years ago, while in a meeting with the Detroit school board, the academy's superintendent stated that resources were being wasted on Charter schools like Murphy Academy and further suggested the contract should not be renewed. It wasn't and the school was closed.
Not long afterward, a trespasser broke in to take video and found personal records of the students and their families thrown all over the floor; birth certificates, social security numbers, addresses and more were discarded where anyone could pick them up. According to Click on Detroit, “that type of information is what thieves can use to open up credit cards or commit other forms of fraud.....It’s the responsibility of the district’s police to monitor vacant buildings.”
So far, the final fate of the school is to be determined.
