Thank goodness not all the abandoned one-room schoolhouses have been torn down; there are still a good number of them still standing.

Like this one – the old Hunt School in Alpena County.

It sits all by itself out in the countryside, surrounded by fields and tall grass, near the intersection of 18951 M-32 & Paul Road, on the southeast corner.

The old Hunt School was a one-room rural district school that opened its doors to a small handful of students in the 1880s. After approximately 70 years, Alpena County underwent a rural school consolidation initiative that closed the one-room schools. The students of these closed schools were then bussed to the newer and larger schools.

The Hunt school officially closed in 1958. Thankfully, it remains standing for us to admire and imagine what it was like to attend classes inside, all day long, with the same kids, same teacher, same classroom. Scroll down a way to see some photos.
