Dust off the camo and practice your best "convincing but not desperate" turkey call... Michigan's 2026 spring turkey season starts April 18 and runs through May 31, depending on your hunting spot.

This year, though, there's a new rule that's less about turkey calls and more about calling it in.

Starting now, every successful hunter must report their turkey harvest within 72 hours or before giving the bird to someone else. Okay. But why?

According to a recent press release, this move was made because the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants better data to keep turkey populations healthy and hunting strong.

The good news is, this isn't too complicated. You've got two options:

You'll need your kill tag or eHarvest tag number and your date of birth. Hit submit, get a confirmation number, and boom... you're officially compliant. Be sure to attach the tag before moving the bird, and don't alter anything that identifies it, or risk getting the side-eye from a conservation officer.

Michigan hit the reset button on turkey management units, trimming everything down to three zones. Unit M covers the entire Upper Peninsula and runs from April 18 through May 31 on both public and private land. Unit NN handles the northern Lower Peninsula with a tighter window from April 18 through May 1, also open on public and private land.

Unit Z takes over the southern Lower Peninsula and comes with options. There's an early hunt from April 18 through May 1, a second stretch from May 2 through May 31, and an unlimited private-land option that runs the full season. There's also a statewide license from May 2 through May 31 that works across multiple regions, depending on land access.

Leftovers are available for purchase. Surplus turkey tags for each spring hunt will continue to be sold until the end of the season or the quota is met.
