Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced today a plan to provide four million free masks to Michiganders all over state, but primarily to areas that need it most.

About a million and a half of those face coverings are earmarked for outside of Detroit. The Ford Corporation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are behind it, as is the Governor, who said at her Friday press conference, "Youth will not protect you from this virus. Your political affiliation will not protect you from this virus. And this virus will not go away just because we're tired of dealing with it,"

The other news coming out of the press conference, is the state's medical director, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, saying the spread of Covid-19 for the time being, seems to have plateaued. But this statement is on the heels of yesterday the state reporting the single highest one day infection numbers since May, so obviously, there's still a ways to go.

But even though not everyone has bought into it, the Governor says the research says the use of masks does help stop the spread of germs. That, along with the use of hand sanitizers, along with wiping down counters, not to mention groceries at home, and at work, office chairs and desk space, computer keyboards and mice and the like, do help prevent the spread of the virus.

The Detroit Free-Press says about a million and a half masks came from FEMA, and another million and a half from Ford, who's retiring CEO  says he's proud of the PPE devices the automaker has made this year.

If you need a mask, just call the state COVID-19 hotline. It's 888-535-6136.
