The Old 1904 Central Fire Station, Lansing

This is one of those old historic buildings I wish was still standing...at least renovated so we could get a glimpse of how it operated all those years ago, BUT NOOO-OO-OOO....

The old 1904 Central Fire Station used to sit at the junction of 125 South Grand Avenue and East Allegan Street in downtown Lansing. If you go searching for the site, it is now the home of the South Grand Parking Ramp.

Although the old firehouse is called the 1904 Central Station, it actually opened in 1905.

Three years later, in 1908, the first motorized fire engine was manufactured, making Lansing’s fire department the first in the entire country to have one. In 1909, one year later, they crashed the fire engine into a hitching post at the corner of Washington and Main.

The 1904 Central Fire Station was used until 1949, and demolished when the current station was dedicated and opened on the SW corner of N. Grand Avenue and E. Shiawassee Street.
