If you've been blaming yourself for a grocery bill that feels a bit unhinged, relax. It's not your fault. It's math. And the math in Michigan's grocery stores isn't adding up in our favor. According to a new Trace One analysis, overall inflation may be holding steady at 2.7%, but groceries are still out here doing their own thing.

In December 2025 alone, grocery prices jumped 0.7%, the biggest one-month increase since October 2022. Which explains why Michigan shoppers keep leaving the store wondering when food became a luxury item.

In Michigan, households spend an average of $617 per month on groceries. That accounts for 7.7% of the state's consumer spending and nearly 47% of total food spending. Almost half of what we spend on food happens in a grocery store aisle.

The other half? Michigan residents also spend about $703 a month on dining out, bringing the monthly average food bill to around $1,319. We're paying premium prices whether someone else cooks it or we do. But it could be worse. Michigan ranks #27 nationally for 'grocery spending burden,' according to the Trace One study.

What’s Driving Prices Higher

What items are driving the pain at the register? The usual suspects:

  • Beef: Roasts, steaks, and ground beef are up dramatically, making meat a "special occasion."
  • Eggs: Still expensive, still essential, but at least there's no purchase cap (for now).
  • Coffee: Up significantly, thanks in part to tariffs (not a lot of coffee farms in Michigan).
  • Bananas, candy, and processed seafood: the basics refuse to stay affordable.

Groceries cost more, carts hold less, and yes, you're still expected to scan everything yourself at checkout. Funny how prices go up, but the job training doesn't come with a paycheck (or discount).
