The 2025 Michigan elk season once again proved that winning the elk lottery is harder than finding a parking spot at Meijer — the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Unbelievable Odds for 2025 Elk Tags

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that 47,500 Michiganders applied for just 260 elk licenses, making this hunt one of the most competitive draws in the state. Odds-wise, you have a better chance of finding a Faygo flavor the state can agree on. But for the lucky few who drew tags, the reward was a front-row seat to one of Michigan's most tightly managed conservation success stories.

The hunts were split between late summer and December in the northern Lower Peninsula, primarily around the Pigeon River Country State Forest. And Mother Nature showed zero mercy. Early hunts were hampered by unseasonable heat that kept elk on the move.

December flipped the script with subzero wind chills, freezing rain, and snow that disappeared just in time to ruin tracking.

Despite all that, a new report shows hunters harvested 153 elk total, including 66 bulls and 87 antlerless elk. That number is not accidental. Michigan's DNR uses these hunts as its main tool to manage an elk population estimated at around 1,150 animals. The goal of the hunt isn't trophies. It's balance. Healthy habitat, stable herd numbers, and fewer elk wandering into places elk should not be wandering.

The result? A sustainable elk population, unforgettable hunts, and proof that conservation in Michigan works best when patience, planning, and a very small number of tags come together. Just don't expect to draw one anytime soon.
