A massive new analysis conducted by iSelect Insurance of nearly 130,000 fatal crashes nationwide found something that feels deeply Michigan, it's not the interstates doing the most damage. It's state highways. Yep, the roads with traffic lights, surprise intersections, Farm equipment, delivery vans, and that one driver doing 52 in a 70 for “safety reasons.”
Why State Highways Are So Dangerous
Nationally, state highways account for 42% of all fatal crashes. Interstates trail far behind. Turns out mixing higher speeds with frequent stops, cross traffic, and limited separation is less an “efficient roadway” and more a “vehicular trust fall.”

Here in Michigan, the numbers get even spicier. Over a 5-year period, the state logged more than 5,000 fatal crashes, with about 41% occurring on state highways alone. That's more than interstates, us highways, or local streets. In other words, the roads we all use daily are quietly running the danger Olympics.
