Inside The Largest Abandoned Hotel in Detroit
It is the largest abandoned hotel in the entire Detroit area.
Looking at the inside photos and video of this hotel, it is a shame it closed down. It originally was constructed in 1976 as the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn – a name which is familiar to thousands of mid-Michiganders.
Currently known as the Edward Hotel & Convention Center, it once included a shopping mall. As for the hotel itself, it boasted an impressive bar, convention center with 51 meeting rooms, fitness/exercise area, 800 guest rooms, a monorail (closed in 1988) that connected the hotel to the Fairlane Town Center, swimming pool, and a bevy of restaurants which included a revolving restaurant on the top floor. I remember that one very well – it was called The Rotunda. We used to travel to Dearborn just to eat in that revolving restaurant!

During the 1970s it was the largest hotel in the entire state of Michigan. According to Detroit Urban Exploring, the hotel also offered an airport shuttle, dry cleaning services, and 24-hour check-in services.
So why is it now abandoned?
The Edward closed in December 2018. The reasons included safety violations and extensive needed maintenance. After complaints, the City made inspections which revealed fire safety issues as well as problems with the elevators, plumbing and other problems, making the hotel unfit for human occupancy. It has been recently purchased by a private developer who has been trying to correct the numerous problems.
To this day it remains unopened. In fact, Google Maps states it’s permanently closed.
