End of an Era: Kositchek’s Closing After 160 Years in Lansing
For generations of Mid-Michigan families, some of life's biggest moments began with a trip to Kosichek's in downtown Lansing. Prom? Kositchek's. First job interview? Kosichek's. Funeral? Kositchek's. If a tie needed tying or a suit needed fitting, chances are someone in your family walked through those doors.

Now, after more than 160 years in business, Kositchek's has announced it will permanently close. WILX reports the decision comes nearly two years after a July 2024 storm caused a catastrophic roof collapse that destroyed much of the store and its inventory. Despite hopes of reopening, the family-owned business says it simply isn't possible.
A Lansing Business That Spanned Generations

Kositchek's traces its roots back to 1865, the same year the Civil War ended. Four generations of the Kositchek family operated the business, making it one of Lansing's longest-running and most recognizable retailers.
Think about that for a second.

This Michigan business survived wars, the Great Depression, countless fashion trends that should never return (looking at you, collarless dress shirt), and every economic curveball imaginable. In the end, it wasn't changing taste that brought it down. It was a roof collapse caused by a historic storm.
When Lansing Needed to Dress Like an Adult

For 160 years, Kositchek's was where Mid-Michigan went when sweatpants and a t-shirt weren't going to cut it. Graduations, weddings... court appearances... if the occasion required a tie, chances are Kositchek's played a role somewhere in your family album.

Lansing isn't just losing a menswear shop. Mid-Michigan is losing a tradition. For thousands of Michigan families, Kositchek's wasn't where you bought a suit. It was where you dressed for the moments that mattered the most. That's a legacy that won't be measured in years, but in wedding photos, prom pics, and Instagram stories.
