Papa John’s Plans Hundreds of Closures: Two Michigan Locations Already Gone

If you're like me and firmly believe Papa John's garlic butter dipping sauce should be given its own food group, you may want to sit down for this one. Papa John's announces the closure of roughly 300 "underperforming" locations across North America by the end of 2027, with about 200 of those closures having happened or yet to come in 2026. And yes, Michigan will feel the impact.

According to USA Today, the company says many of the targeted stores are older, franchise-owned locations that simply aren't bringing in the dough they once did.

Why Is Papa John's Closing Stores in Michigan?

The pizza giant has been battling declining sales, rising operating costs, increased competition, and a shift in dining habits. Apparently, Michiganders are spending more time chasing chicken tenders, burritos, and fancy salad bowls than stuffed-crust happiness coated in garlic and butter.

Papa John's reported continued sales declines throughout North America and has already shuttered dozens of locations this year. The company says closing weaker stores should allow franchise owners to focus resources on stronger locations and improve their bottom line.

Which Michigan Papa John's Locations Have Closed, and Who's Next?

While Papa John's has not released an official nationwide upcoming closure list, InspireMore reports two Michigan locations have been served their last pies:

• Cadillac
  • 207 S Mitchell Street
• Grand Rapids
  • 2452 Alpine NW

The good news? This isn't a statewide pizza apocalypse. Most Michigan locations appear safe for now. Still, if your Friday night plans involve a large pepperoni and a cup of garlic butter dipping sauce the size of Lake Michigan, it might not hurt to take a moment to appreciate your local Papa John's.
