Michigan May Soon Have Its First Professional Women’s Baseball Team
Big news has recently been dropped as it was recently announced that starting in 2026 there will be a new professional women’s baseball league launching in the northeast part of the United States, according to Yahoo Sports.
It’s very possible that among the six teams that are said to be based in the northeast, that Michigan could have, it’s first professional women’s baseball league in history. This would be a very fitting piece of newest considering that when it comes to professional women’s baseball, Michigan is home to the last championship team.
This of course goes back to the founding of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was started in 1943 and ran until 1954. It was, of course, the league that the 1992 film A League of Their Own was based on.
Although the Rockford Peaches had the most titles in the league history, the Grand Rapids Chicks also held two titles as well as the Kalamazoo Lassies who, while only winning one title, were the final champions in the league's history.
So bringing women’s baseball back to Michigan seems fitting, considering they kind of have a championship to defend. It's said that Keith Stein and Justin Siegel will both be serving as the co-founders of the Women’s Professional Baseball League, the latter of which said the time is right for this league:
The Women’s Professional Baseball League is here for all the girls and women who dream of a place to showcase their talents and play the game they love. We have been waiting over 70 years for a professional baseball league we can call our own. Our time is now.
