When Jackson’s Horace Blackman Park Was Called Central Park: Early 1900s
Horace Blackman Park. Some Jacksonians may not be familiar with the park name, but the place? Yes.
Once the old Consumers Energy headquarters was torn down, the park grew.....and now, various events take place there: picnics, reunions, receptions, and parties; It’s become a place to take the kids and to just sit and relax.
Why named after Horace Blackman? According to Wiki, in July 1829, Blackman and an Indian guide arrived at (what is now) the vicinity of Trail and Jackson Street. Blackman made a claim for 160 acres, then came back to the area that August with his brother. They settled at (what is now) the corner of Ingham and Trail. After a few name changes (Jacksonopolis and Jacksonburgh) the town’s moniker was shortened to Jackson in 1838.

But before the park became expanded and re-named after that early Jackson settler, it was called Central Park – many years ago. No matter the name, it remains Jackson’s oldest park and still holds the charm from what it once was: part of the original town square.
Below is a gallery featuring some old photos from over 100 years ago, when it was known as Central Park, as well as a few current images.
