'Tis the season for scammers to come out in full force and it seems that one of the annual holiday scams is back again this year. Which one? Well, that would be the "Secret Sister" gift exchange on Facebook. I've already seen some people sharing this again on their Facebook page and if you happen to be one of those people, you should know that it's a scam and it's also illegal.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the "Secret Sister" gift exchange started popping up on Facebook pages back in 2015.  If you're not familiar with it, the scam promises participants that they will receive up to 36 gifts, in exchange for sending one gift, valued at $10. Of course, you're supposed to invite all of your 'sisters', friends and family to participate in the gift exchange because the more the merrier, right? Well, the BBB says not so fast.

The scam is pretty complex but the main point that you need to know is that the whole "Secret Sister" gift exchange is a well-disguised pyramid scheme and is actually illegal. The BBB says that gift exchanges like this one are considered a "form of gambling and that participants could be subject to penalties such as jail time, fines or a lawsuit for mail fraud." You can click here to find out more. In the meantime, if you or someone you know has recently shared the "Secret Sister" gift exchange on any social media accounts, it needs to be deleted as soon as possible.
