Canoeing or kayaking on one of the Great Lakes can be one of the most fun and relaxing experiences ever.

I've only been kayaking once and that was with my wife Lori. That was a few years back on one of the local lakes in the Lansing area. And of course, we've both spent many times canoeing down a lazy river on a hot sunny day.

So many people love the water and love canoeing and kayaking. (

Here are some amazing paddling trips in Michigan:

1. AuSable River. This is a great river that flows through the northern portion of the Lower Peninsula. This is a the perfect river for canoeing and kayaking and you don't have to be that experienced either. I canoed down the AuSable when I was in the boy scouts and had a lot of fun. (50 miles)

2. Manistee River. This river stretches almost 200 miles through the Manistee National Forest. Not only a great river for canoeing and kayaking, but also good for fishing. And it's a local favorite for tubing and rafting.

3. Pictured Rocks. I just can't say enough about Pictured Rocks. This is one of the most scenic areas you will ever see and unforgettable. The best view of the cliffs is from either kayak or canoe. There's nothing better than paddling on Lake Superior for spectacular views of the layered sandstone rocks.

4. Keweenaw Water Trail. If you're looking for an extended paddling trip, then this has your name written all over it. A weeklong trail that starts and ends in Houghton, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. There's plenty of campsites and cabins along the way.

5. Onekama to Arcadia. You will absolutely love this canoeing or kayaking experience. Paddle the shore of Lake Michigan as you cruise by the famous Arcadia Bluffs. The route leads you toward the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Here's the best part, you can stop wherever you want on the Lake Michigan coastline.
