The Michner Plating Company on Mechanic Street in Jackson shut its doors in 2007.

It was part of a 140,000 square foot industrial complex on the corner of Mechanic and West Trail Street. The complex was completed between 1907 and 1910. An expansion in 1920 included a new brick building and a basement with extra doors for easier access. More new buildings soon followed.

Other businesses that once held space at the complex included Weeks Drug & Chemical, Lewis Blessings Cigar & Paper Box, and Novelty Manufacturing. Weeks and Blessings were purchased by the Isbell Seed company around 1920 and held on for ten years until 1930 after the Great Depression hit.

Joseph Michner bought the complex in 1935, and founded the Michner Plating Corporation which, over the years, supplied automobile parts and accessories, electroplating, engraving and more.

When and Why Did Michner Plating Close?

After numerous OSHA violation notices along with operation costs outweighing the outcome, Michner closed the Mechanic Street site in 2007. Since the 2010s, the property has become fodder for thrillseekers, entering and recording the insides and posting the findings online.
