An Old Abandoned Church Hidden in the Woods in Mooreville

Before we get to the abandoned photos, here's a little info on Mooreville, a little village in York Township, Washtenaw County.

It was named after New York resident John L. Moore who came here in 1830 and set up a homestead along the Saline River. When the first post office opened in 1833, Moore became the first postmaster. However, the following year the P.O. was re-named 'York' after the township. The post office closed for good in 1907, but the village kept the name 'Mooreville' and some old atlases referred to the village as 'York'.

These days, Mooreville sits quietly in the countryside, with not many homes and a few old buildings still standing. One of the old structures is an old church, hidden back in the woods just off the road. You can tell it was once an impressive small-town chapel, with the old bell tower still intact, rotting away, seen barely above the treeline during fall and winter.....and not at all during summer

Traipsing just a few feet off the road through the underbrush and trees, you come across the church which suddenly appears before you, standing on a small hill. In its current decaying condition, it kinda reminds me of the Bates house in the film “Psycho”.
