The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently conducted tests on 95 different skin care products and found that some sold here in Michigan contain unsafe levels of benzene. The good news is that 90% of the products tested had undetectable or very low levels of the potential cancer-causing ingredient, but the FDA has determined that some of these acne treatments should be recalled.

Benzene, a chemical in gas, crude oil, and cigarette smoke, has been shown to increase the risk of cancer. The FDA notified the manufacturers of products containing unsafe levels of benzene, and they voluntarily agreed to recall the products from retailers in Michigan and across the country.

If these products have been a part of your daily routine for years, the FDA says your risk of cancer is still "very low." While that's comforting, it's like being told the shark you just found out is swimming with you "probably isn't hungry."

What Happens Now?

So, what do you do if you have one or more of these products in your home? Well, the FDA isn't clear on that, as this is a voluntary recall by these manufacturers. Michigan retailers will pull them from shelves, but the press release offers no advice on what to do if you own them.
