The Largest Gift Shop in the North: Treasure City, Manistique

They call themselves “The Largest Gift Shop in the North” and they are very possibly correct. It’s Treasure City, located at 5711W. US-2 in Manistique.

Treasure City opened up in June 1984 as the usual kind of souvenir shop you would find in the Upper Peninsula. With success came constant additions and the store became packed with clothing, food, U.P.-made souvenirs and keepsakes, home & lodge decor, Yooper souvenirs, moccasins, candles, jewelry, ice cream, homemade fudge, and unique items throughout.

Treasure City was the brainchild of Bob, Betty, Terry Knoph, and Kathy Skok, and today is owned by Kathy and her husband Brian along with a team of trusted managers and employees.

Treasure City’s reputation has spilled over into other states, with out-of-staters paying visits every season. TC was also featured in an episode of “Under the Radar” on the Travel Channel.

As quoted in the Daily Press, Kathy stated “We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community and customers over the past 40 years. We strive to provide a unique shopping experience and offer products that our customers love. By carefully considering factors like cost and uniqueness, we aim to create a store that stands out from the crowd.”

Although their website says they opened in 1984, an old postcard was dated 1962...so what’s the real story? Did someone originally own it?
