The Sunset Auto Drive-in Theater in Van Buren County was on its way to becoming the longest-running theater in the state... but it unfortunately lost its chance.

The theater was located at 69017 Red Arrow Highway in Hartford. It opened for business in 1948, just one of many drive-in theaters throughout the country that began operating after World War II.

It carried a decent capacity of 239 and was doing a remarkable business in this small Michigan town.

So why did it close when it was so close to becoming a Michigan history footnote?

The Sunset Drive-In and its sister theater, the 5-Mile Drive-In in Dowagiac, both closed and were put on the market in 2024. According to the owners, there were serious health issues and concerns within the family, and they had no choice but to permanently close and turn their focus toward their well-being.

It made it a good 76 years, still a healthy run..... and I don’t believe they will have a problem in being a footnote in Michigan’s drive-in theater legacy.
