100 Years Old in 2027: Jackson’s M-50 Sandstone Creek Bridge
Another Jackson County Historic Site that some people might not be aware of is the M-50–Sandstone Creek Bridge, sometimes called the Tompkins Bridge.
Need proof?
Back in 2000 it became an entry on the National Register of Historic Places.
Sometime around 1910, before the road was co-named M-50, it was simply Clinton Road. It was basically taken over by the Michigan State Trunkline Highway System, who built a 62-foot bridge over Sandstone Creek.

By the 1920s, this bridge was no longer sufficient or able to handle the needs of the highway. Finally, in 1927 the Michigan State Highway Department set the wheels in motion to construct a new, more capable bridge.
After hiring the Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Company out of Milwaukee, a new steel structure was built over the creek.
In 1927, the bridge turns 100 years old.
