Jackson’s Sparks Park Bridge Originated in 1931

Have you ever given a passing thought to this cool bridge even though you’ve probably been over it many times?

The Denton Road-Sparks Foundation Park Pond Bridge (long name, ain’t it?) began life when the original was built in 1931.

It was the same year that William & Matilda Sparks began plans for a recreation area for the people of Jackson. After forming the Sparks Foundation, park development kicked in. The massive fountains that became known as the Cascades was constructed as the park’s main draw.

However, people from the south end of the park needed an easier way to enter the park. Thus, the Denton Road bridge was designed and constructed by the Michigan State Highway Department designed to aid south end Jacksonians access to the park.

Jackson County took over possession of the park in 1944. Although the original bridge was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, it was decided to demolish it in 2007, and replace it with a newer, sturdier, similar version.

In the 2020s, it retains the feel and architecture of the original 1930s bridge and is one of Jackson's Historic Sites.
