VIDEO: Re-visit the 1999 MSU Campus Riots
This is still fresh in my memory.
One of the area’s dark moments…and I was briefly there. There have been a handful of riots on the MSU campus but this was the worst.
On the night of March 27, 1999 after losing a basketball game to Duke University during the Final Four, approximately 10,000 students and riot-wannabe's gathered near campus. After the more violent of the bunch were through burning furniture, trash, etc. and breaking windows, private property and damaging automobiles and more, the damages assessed to just about half a million dollars. Total of people arrested: 132 with 71 of them students.
Thanks to this East Lansing student riot, a state law was passed that now gives judges the power to ban any riot-induced students from any public college for two years.
