Seven Different Ways to Rest in the Lansing Area
Are you feeling a little sluggish lately? Did you know that there are 7 different types of rest that every person needs? Who would've thought? Not me.
I'm over here thinking the only rest I need is physical and mental rest. But there's a lot more to it. So if you've been feeling like you constantly need a nap, I 100% understand. Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith's book Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity covers the 7 types of rest we need.
Physical Rest
This can be passive or active rest. Passive physical rest would be napping or sleeping. Active rest would be something like yoga, massages or anything low impact that still keeps the body moving. Mental Rest
Let your brain take a break every now and then. You don't always have to be on the move. Take 20 minutes to yourself every couple of hours. You know what they say, "A body in motion, stays in motion." How do you expect your brain to slow down if you don't?
Sensory Rest
Put down your phone or close your laptop for awhile. Bright lights and background noises can be overwhelming for our senses. Make sure you take a break after dinner and before bed.
Creative Rest
It's sort of similar to mental rest, but focuses more on taking a step back from your creative space. If you're someone who's work revolves around brainstorming or problem solving, you'll benefit from this the most. Hit the reset button by getting outside in nature and visit these Lansing area hikes or check out some area art.
Emotional Rest
Freely express your feelings with a loved one or a professional. If you feel like there are people in your life who exhaust you are bring negativity, it is okay to take a break from them or remove them from your life. If you're looking to speak to a professional, click here.
Social Rest
If you feel like you're surrounded by people who drain your energy, it's important to surround yourself with people who lift your spirits.
Spiritual Rest
It doesn't matter how you do it, but take some time out of your day to add in prayer or meditation. Even getting involved in your community and giving back can help. Here are some places to volunteer in the Lansing area.
