Yes, this is going to be one of those, "back in my day" stories so strap in.

How do you think they used to carve pumpkins before those cute little tools?

With elbow grease and a pretty sharp knife.

And folks made out just fine.

The fun of carving the pumpkin was to make your own unique, less than perfect, probably ugly, and super scary jack-o-lantern.

Back in the day, you didn't have a pumpkin scoop to get all the guts.

You spooned the innards and used your hands.

Now you've got tools.

And this.

You can trace that on a pumpkin, use the tools, and make it perfect?

And so it will look like everyone else's in the neighborhood?

WE THINK NOT!

You don't need a kit to carve a pumpkin.

The above is absolutely for adults to do and not kids alone. This is a family function after all and you shouldn't let the kids do it by themselves let alone using sharp knives.

Now if you really want to get fancy, you can find a couple of Exacto knives around the house and a couple of other common tools and get busy like the pros.

The above is a little extra when it comes to the actual carving, but if you want your pumpkin to really stand out you might want to invest a little more time and effort.
