A monster storm that blew through Michigan on Saturday left a trail of destruction for many residents to clean up. After the dust settled, the National Weather Service has confirmed that three tornadoes touched down, including one EF-2 twister that destroyed several homes in Port Austin, located in Huron County in the thumb.

  • EF-2 Touched down in Port Austin at 5:49 pm, peak winds estimated at 120 mph.
  • EF-0 Touched down in Ionia County at 4:31 pm, peak winds estimated at 70 mph.
  • EF-1 Touched down in Ionia County at 4:40 pm, peak winds estimated at 90 mph.

According to a statement from the National Weather Service's Detroit office, the twister in Huron County began as an EF-0, uprooting trees and "damaging barns and outbuildings."

It then tracked northeast, crossing M-53 just south of M-25, causing damage to several homes:

  • Damage to six houses,
  • Three roofs completely detached,
  • One house with major roof damage,
  • Two garages completely destroyed,
  • One barn completely destroyed.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the National Weather Services notes that its findings are preliminary at this point, pending finalization.

No deaths have been reported, but according to WDIV, six people in Huron County were injured.

Heavy rainfall in the Detroit area overwhelmed the city's sewage system, leading to major flooding in that area. In the second video below, you'll see several abandoned vehicles which were stuck on I-94 near Trumbull due to flooding.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for some parts of the Metro Detroit area due to flooding and water damage.
