Seven Gables Road: Michigan's Most Haunted Road or Not?

Here we go – another trip down Memory Lane.....better known as 7 Gables Road.

The website Only in Your State refers to 7 Gables Road as “The Most Haunted Street in Michigan”. The road might just be the most-talked and written about, but I have another candidate for the ‘most haunted’. But first, some backstory on 7 Gables Road, to see why some consider this our ‘most haunted’.....

The road – NOT a street - is 2 ½ miles southwest of Dansville, just off Dexter Trail.

Once upon a time, an old seven-gabled house stood at the end of Seven Gables Road. The urban legend says the owner murdered all six of his family members – wife and children - by hanging them from the gables. Still in a mad, incoherent frenzy, he set fire to the house and then took his own life. Visitors who dared down that road at night say they’ve seen a woman or women dressed in white, blood-stained gowns.

That’s the plausible version...the outlandish version says a witch is responsible for the weird stuff that happens down that road. If you are walking down the road on the other side of the gate and hear a scream, don’t be the last one to jump over the gate...legend says you’ll die.

I’ve been down that road during the day and walked off-road into the woods and fields. I did find a house foundation and old well a ways beyond the end of the road. Not many people are aware, but there was a SECOND house in the area. The foundation of the second house can be found west of the gate a ways through the woods. So which house is the legend about?

This is one of mid-Michigan's greatest ‘haunted road’ stories, but there are so many more. There is Church Road in Hillsdale, Knock-Knock Road, Baker Road and others...but the two that may be more haunted than 7 Gables is Hatchet Man Road near Kalamazoo and my personal choice for #1: Dice Road in Saginaw County.

With all due respect to Only in Your State, yes, 7 Gables Road can be considered as the ‘most haunted road’ in Michigan...but I urge them to check out Dice Road...or even Hatchet Man Road.
