Michigan Wolves – Happy Healthy and Howling Somewhere in The U.P.

Michigan's wolves are doing fine, thanks. The Michigan DNR just released their most recent wolf population survey, which shows we've got about 700 wolves living in Michigan.

According to MLive.com, the survey came up with a population of 695 wolves in 143 separate packs - all in the Upper Peninsula (my guess is that we also have a few sneaky ones in the Lower Peninsula). The survey was taken last winter, between December and March - "the time of year when wolf populations are naturally at their lowest point". Which makes sense, when you take into account pups being born in the spring - so the population is actually higher than that.

The Michigan wolf population has been a stable 600-700 in recent years. Impressive, after being down to 6 wolves in 1973.
