Just when Michigan finally starts flirting with spring, along comes measles like an uninvited party guest who refuses to leave. Even after you slap your leg and say, "Welp!" According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), a confirmed measles outbreak has been identified in Washtenaw County, with three linked cases reported since March 12, 2026.

The outbreak is tied to travel, because measles also enjoys a nice Florida vacation before coming home to a host of symptoms. Michigan health officials say cases are climbing nationwide, with more than 1,350 cases reported across 31 states in early 2026.

Measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus. Not "kind of contagious." More like "if it walks into a room, it owns the room." Symptoms usually show up 7-14 days after exposure and include:

  • High fever (often over 104°F)
  • Cough and runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Tiny white spots inside the mouth
  • A spreading red rash

It can also come with serious complications like pneumonia, brain swelling, and in rare cases, death. So yeah... measles isn't something you can just "walk off."

Here's the good news: this is largely preventable, especially if you've received your measles vaccine, which has been available since 1954. Here's what you can do to prevent catching it:

  • Check your MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine status (two doses = 97% protection)
  • Call your doctor before showing up at the office if you have symptoms
  • Be extra cautious when traveling and returning from trips
  • Protect vulnerable groups like infants and those with compromised immune systems
