Did you know that when you play the lottery a big chunk of the money goes to schools? Yup! It's one of the ways public schools in Michigan receive funding so think about that the next time you're scratching those numbers on your lotto ticket.

For fiscal year 2020, the Michigan Lottery just made their biggest contribution yet with more than $1.179 billion going to the School Aid Fund. This is the second year in a row the Michigan Lottery has raised more than a billion dollars for K-12 schools. It's also the sixth year in a row that the record has been broken.

Governor Whitmer says this will go a long way for students, educators, and communities.

I am grateful to the players, retailers, vendors, and state agencies who make this investment in our kids and their future possible.

The School Aid Fund has been receiving money from the lotto since 1972 and has gotten a total of more than $24.5 billion over the decades.

The year 2020 saw other record-breaking moments for the Michigan Lottery.

...including more than $4.2 billion in sales, more than $2.5 billion in prizes to players, and more than $307 million in commissions to Lottery retail locations across Michigan...

What awesome news to see how the money has helped people and businesses in our state, especially in a year when they needed it the most.

The increase in sales was due to the increase in online traffic which went up 88% from the year prior.

For fiscal year 2020 the Michigan Lottery profits went to the following:

  • 61% to pay out players in prizes
  • 28% to the School Aid Fund
  • 9% commission to retailers and vendors
  • 2% to fund the operations of the lottery office
