The National Spelling Bee is underway this week, which means Michigan is once again forced to confront the horrifying reality that the English language was apparently created during a caffeine-fueled committee meeting where no one was allowed to use logic.

Seriously, whoever came up with "I before E except after C" owes generations of students a formal apology and probably financial compensation. That rule collapses faster than a lawn chair at a graduation party the second words like "weird," "neighbor," or "science" enter the chat.

New research from Unscrambler.com analyzed Google search data from January through mid-May 2026, tracking searches like "how to spell" and "how do you spell." The results read like America collectively panicked before every fourth-grade spelling test.

Nationally, the most searched spelling struggles included "bougie," "favorite," "through," "business," and "definitely." And of course "through" made the list. That word looks like somebody lost a fight with a keyboard. Researchers say silent letters, weird vowel combinations, double consonants, and borrowed words from other languages are the main reasons English spelling feels like an obstacle course.

That's right. Which. Not a fancy French word. Not a 14-letter nightmare. Just "which." Honestly though? Without spellcheck and the little red line quietly saving our dignity at least 40 times a day, we'd all be face-down in a Webster's Dictionary wondering where and how our lives went sideways.
