The Mackinac Bridge celebrated its 61st birthday on November 1, 2018. The mighty Mac remains mighty to this day and has spawned several "Little Mac" bridges throughout our state.

It was on the Mackinac Bridge where I got my very first traffic ticket, many years ago. It was almost midnight as I was coming back from the U.P., not paying attention to the 45 MPH speed limit. A bridge cop pulled me over, said I was doing 65 MPH and issued me my very first speeding ticket.

Since the bridge opened on November 1, 1957, it has become a fond subject for historians, tourists and the curious.

The photo gallery below shows the progress of the construction of the Mackinac Bridge from 1954-1957.

People of the Mackinaw/Mackinac area had discussed a bridge to span across the straits of Mackinac ever since 1884; but with delays, snafu's, politics, arguments and neglect, the actual construction didn't begin until decades later in 1954.

The Mackinac Bridge was finally opened to the public on November 1, 1957.

Enjoy the photo gallery below...it's another look at a fascinating piece of Michigan history!
