2020 was definitely a rough year for many unemployed Michiganders and moving forward in 2021 is going to be a challenge for many as well.

According to the Lansing State Journal, Michigan residents who are out of work this spring will get an extra bump each week thanks to the $900 billion stimulus bill federal lawmakers passed in late December.

The additional $300 per week, is half of what the first federal stimulus provided. And that extra money hasn't been administered to Michiganders quite yet.

Outside of the pandemic, few people who are out of work actually get state unemployment benefits here in Michigan.

Overall, nearly 700,000 Michigan workers are currently receiving benefits under the federal program.

The stimulus bill passed in December extends those benefits into March. It's allowing people to continue to receive money who are not entitled to regular state benefits.

The latest stimulus plan includes an additional $300 in weekly unemployment benefits. Unemployed Michigan residents can expect the $300 to appear in their weekly payments very soon. (LSJ)

The $300 weekly bump included in the second stimulus will be issued to people who have an active claim from Dec. 27 through March 13.

Michiganders who filed a state unemployment claim before Jan. 1 will receive 26 weeks. People who filed on or after Jan. 1 will receive a maximum of 20 weeks unless the legislature passes a new bill. (LSJ)

Last week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an economic relief bill that included funding for small business grants. She also signed a bill that will extend unemployment benefits for 26 weeks through March.
