Lansing Schools Balance Budget Hit by COVID-19
Lansing schools are working overtime just to balance their budget hit by the coronavirus pandemic. We're sure that most schools are struggling with budget issues.
According to the Lansing State Journal, the Lansing School District will use more than half of its savings to balance next year's $160.4 million budget.
The district's board of education approved a budget that takes just over $6 million from the district's $12.1 million general fund balance to break even in the 2020-21 budget, leaving the fund balance at about 4%.
The ongoing pandemic took a notable toll on the budget and leaves schools facing uncertainty.
When you look at the big picture here, even colleges are having a tough time trying to figure out where to make cuts, and whether to continue with face to face classes or online classes only.
The school board president said, we don't know what our state funding is going to be next year. We're using the best information currently available to us with the understanding that it might change dramatically.
The Lansing State Journal adds that state funding cuts won't be decided for months. School districts must approve their budgets by June 30, legislators are mandated to present governor Gretchen Whitmer a budget by July 1 and they have until Sept. 30 to approve it.
Lansing School District dipped into its fund balance last year when it used about $1.1 million to break even.
